Our entrance into Nigeria on the 30th of April was quicker and much less corrupt than expected, not being asked for any bribes at the small border crossing we went to. We ended up having to stay the night in a fancy hotel in Abeokuta, as we weren’t able to get out of the city before dark to find somewhere to bush camp. Many police checkpoints during the day, including the first request to see our yellow fever vaccination cards, slowed down our progress of getting very far - it took nearly six hours to get 60 km from the border. I shared a room with Shani, Guðbjörg, and Elizabeth, and we enjoyed a shower, air conditioning, and a fridge in which Guðbjörg and I chilled our shared bottle of Bailey’s.
We left from Abeokuta on May 1st, getting to drive on the quick motorway, with only two police checkpoints - we had taken bets on how many there would be, thinking it would be a similarly high amount as the day before. The drivers in Nigeria ignore the division in the middle of the road, driving in both directions on both sides. We bush camped in an area off the road and I gave my presentation about Nigeria. We continued driving on, camping at a school on the 2nd, where the buildings looked abandoned - no desks or chairs, a cracked cement ground - but evidence that the rooms were still in use by the date written on the math chalkboard. We drove to Calabar on the 3rd, experiencing lots of traffic, noise, beeping, yelling, and tension in the cities. We passed through the town Abia, where we drove through some huge muddy puddles and broken roads. We arrived to Calabar that night and got rooms to stay in for a few days at King Harry’s guesthouse - I shared with Travis, Jørn, and Lukas - and access to their backyard for our cooking setup.
On the 4th of May (May the Fourth Be With You!), we found out that the workers of the Cameroon embassy weren’t around because the Cameroon president was in Nigeria, so they were busy attending to him, leading us to not be able to submit visa applications for a couple more days.
I went out for pizza with Guðbjörg, Elizabeth, and Tom V. on the 5th, and bought some dinner groceries on the way back to the guesthouse. A bunch of us played cards later on with Conor, a Canadian we met who has been driving his motorcycle through Africa for 9 months, traveling north from South Africa. The next day, I went with Shani and Elizabeth to visit the monkey sanctuary. We walked part of the way back toward the guesthouse, stopped to see the botanic garden, which was very disappointing, then took a taxi back the rest of the way. That night we all hung out, had dinner, and a bit of a dance party in the air conditioned room.
